Student Organizations are not authorized to host activities that in any way include Auctioning or Bidding on a person or group of people. These activities may be referred to as Date Auctions, Social Auctions, Companionship Bidding, or by other title, and are prohibited in all forms. These activities do not align with the Mission and Values of the Office of Student Life which oversees these organizations.

Racial Sensitivity

People auctions can evoke images of historical slave auctions, which dehumanized individuals by treating them as commodities. They may also create an uncomfortable, racially divisive or discriminatory environment for participants.  GVSU values equality and respect for all, and any activity suggesting the auctioning of individuals contradicts these principles.

Gender Sensitivity and Safety

People auctions can reinforce harmful gender stereotypes and create expectations of entitlement, potentially leading to unhealthy dynamics in relationships. The university is dedicated to fostering a culture of mutual respect and safety, and such events risk undermining these values.

Power Dynamics and Hazing Concerns

In organizations with selective membership, people auctions may create harmful power dynamics. The act of auctioning individuals, particularly in the context of new members or participants, can be viewed as a form of hazing, which is strictly prohibited. These events can reinforce the idea of control and dominance within the group, which can lead to uncomfortable, coercive, or unsafe situations. GVSU is committed to preventing hazing and promoting healthy, inclusive environments where all students feel respected and valued, free from any form of exploitation or undue pressure.

Sexual Harassment or other Misconduct

People auctions can give rise to prohibited behavior under the University’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment and Misconduct by placing participants in compromising settings, which could lead to unwanted sexual advances or other nonconsensual sexual behaviors or misconduct. Depending on the conduct and circumstances, people auctions may also be a violation of Michigan laws regarding prostitution, human trafficking and/or gambling.

In light of the above, we encourage student organizations to explore alternative activities that promote inclusivity, respect, and a positive environment for all community members.
