Student Scholars Day 2021

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship has decided to hold this year's event virtually. This year is also the 25th SSD, and we're very excited to explore a new and innovative format to celebrate the history of student research at GVSU. This year, SSD will support recorded presentations, of no more than 30 minutes in length, via the Symposium platform. The presentations will be available for viewing and comment for 2 weeks. These presentations can be poster presentations with a voice over, recorded slide presentations, or a recorded exhibit, performance, or demonstration. Additionally, similar to SSD 2020, faculty will have the ability to curate and moderate sessions. These sessions will be live and held on Wednesday, April 14 and are an hour in length. This year, we are also offering extended sessions. This presentation type is similar to a traditional session, however extended sessions are longer in length. The extended session was created to accommodate classes and departments that need additional time beyond one hour. Faculty interested in hosting an extended session should contact OURS for more information.

Sessions & Extended Sessions

The faculty member will be in charge of how the presentations flow within the session. The registration system allows for individual abstracts, so if you would like individual time slots published for the presenters, then including it in the title or the abstract is an option. You may also forgo adding it to the abstract(s) in favor of the character count, rather, you can use the “Description” box to list the students' names and times when the Live Sessions are listed on Symposium. When the public looks at the Schedule Builder, they will see are the names of the presenters, the entire time block for the session, and the abstract(s). Guests will be directed to the SSD 2021 Access page and will be able to find the presentations when they visit the Symposium site and click on “Live Sessions.”

Extended Session

Mentor Responsibilities

  • Create your Zoom meeting, and share the link and password with us using our online form (also found below) by April 7th. We will submit live session information into the Symposium system.
  • We recommend that students arrive early to test their audio or video (if needed) before the presentation begins.
  • Add your students as co-hosts for the meeting, so they are able to share their screen for their presentation. This can be done during the meeting in two ways:
  • Option 1:
    • Hover over a the student's webcam video
    • Click the ellipsis icon
    • Click Make Co-Host
  • Option 2:
    • Click Participants in the meeting controls at the bottom of Zoom window
    • Hover over the student's name and choose More
    • Click Make Co-Host
