Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships - The GVSU Office of Fellowships provides advice and support to GVSU students and alumni who pursue competitive fellowship opportunities (Fulbright and many more).  The website has an extensive list of non-GVSU fellowship opportunities, including undergraduate summer research experiences. • REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates)- The best way to begin is to read through all of the good information on the NSF REU page - REU - For Students | NSF - National Science Foundation. And then, more particularly, Search for an REU Site | NSF - National Science (see also REU Finder). You’ll need to contact the individual sites for the REUs of interest to you to get information and application materials for that particular REU at that particular university.  Most university REU websites are super clear and informative! You’ll find good advice about applying for REUs at GVSU_REU_Application_Tips.pdf - Google Drive.
• Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program in Science and Technology (summer research fellowships at top research universities - each university has its own summer dates and application process for specific human therapeutic, biotech and/or biomed research projects - much like the NSF-REU program)

American Astronomical Society
The American Astronomical Society provides an extensive list of research and internship opportunities for undergraduates studying astronomy and astrophysics.

American Mathematical Society
The American Mathematical Society provides an extensive list of research experiences for undergraduates studying various programs in mathematics.

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers
The ASHRAE Senior Undergraduate Project Grant Program provides grants to engineering, technical and architectural schools worldwide with the goal of increasing student knowledge, learning and awareness of the HVAC&R industry through the design and construction of senior projects. Grants are to be used to fund equipment and supplies for senior projects that focus on ASHRAE-related topics.

Geological Society of America Farouk El-Baz Student Research Grant
This grant is to encourage and support desert studies by students either in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, or at the Masters or Ph.D. level.

Geological Society of America Section Research Grants
These Sections provide grant awards for undergraduate research projects. Research proposals are evaluated competitively. The number of awards may vary from year to year depending upon the funding available from the Section Treasury.

Parkinson's Disease Foundation
PDF’s Summer Fellowship Program is used to support students – from advanced undergraduates to graduate and medical students – in their pursuit of Parkinson's-related summer research projects.  The goal of the Summer Fellowship is to cultivate an early interest in Fellows into the cause(s) and possible treatments for Parkinson's disease.

Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues
The Applied Social Issues Internship encourages research that is conducted in cooperation with a community or government organization, public interest group or other not-for-profit entity that will benefit directly from the project.

United Negro College Fund
UNCF • Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards are intended to help African American undergraduate students who are interested in science to further their science education and potentially pursue science and engineering careers. The UNCF • Merck awards provide tuition support and opportunities for research experience in a state-of-the-art research facility.

Federal and State Departments and Agencies:

Central Intelligence Agency
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) offers undergraduate student internships, undergraduate co-ops and graduate studies programs for students. They also offer summer employment in the following areas: Analytical, Clandestine Service, Language, Science, Engineering & Technology, or Business, IT & Security.

Idaho National Laboratory

The INL offers internship opportunities that are challenging, innovative and on the cutting edge of today's technology. Internships are available to university undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. Students are mentored by INL scientists and engineers to increase the exchange of ideas, information and technology, and hands-on educational experience in the student's field of study. These programs focus on selecting qualified university students whose educational background and declared major match projects that meet the mission of the INL.

Maryland Sea Grant
The Maryland Sea Grant Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research on the Chesapeake Bay for 12 weeks in the summer.  The program is especially designed for students majoring in such fields as biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, engineering, physics, marine science and mathematics.

Department of the Navy -The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of the Navy laboratory during the summer.

NASA
NASA offers spring, summer, and fall research internship opportunities to undergraduate students studying engineering, mathematics, computer science, or physical and life sciences.

National Heart Lung and Blood Institute
The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute offers a Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics.  The seven-week course targets undergraduate students who are interested in learning about biostatistics and provides an intensive introduction to biostatistical approaches and research.

National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering
The Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program is for undergraduate biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior or senior year of college.  This ten-week program allows students to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research projects.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
The Summers of Discovery program provides internships to undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in biomedical/biological sciences to work on a research project that entails exposure to the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques in a given field.

National Institutes of Health
The Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world.

National Institute of Standards and Technology Professional Research Experience Program (PREP)
The NIST PREP is designed by the NIST Boulder Laboratories to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students. Fellowships are awarded to assure continued growth and progress of science and engineering in the United States.

National Institute of Standards and Technology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
The NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is designed for undergraduate students majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering. SURF provides meaningful research opportunities in six different laboratories.

National Science Foundation
The NSF REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.  Students apply directly to REU sites and should consult the directory of active REU sites on the NSF website.

National Wildlife Federation
NWF Fellowships allow students to pursue their vision of an ecologically sustainable future through tangible projects to confront global warming on campus and in the community. Fellows gain practical experience in the conservation field and first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities inherent in successful conservation efforts.

Sandia National Laboratories
The Summer Technical Student Internship Program at Sandia National Laboratories provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in science, math, engineering, technology, computer science and MIS disciplines to integrate their academic program with work-related experience during their summer break.

Smithsonian National Zoological Park
The Research Internship Program of the National Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center offers internships in each of its major program areas: conservation biology, reproductive sciences, and science and education training.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
This internship program is aimed at undergraduates or early-stage graduate students.  The goal is to enable students to develop working skills pertinent to future careers that contribute to the understanding of tropical biodiversity and its relevance to humankind.

U.S. Department of Energy Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships program places students in paid research internships related to science and engineering.  Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories’ research programs.

U.S. Department of Energy Research Opportunities

U.S. Department of Homeland Security
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for rising juniors and seniors majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research in DHS mission-relevant research areas at federal research facilities located across the country.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
The purpose of the National Network for Environmental Management Studies Program is to: provide students with practical research opportunities and experiences in an EPA office or laboratory; increase public awareness of and involvement in environmental issues; encourage qualified individuals to pursue environmental careers; help defray the costs associated with the pursuit of academic programs related to the field of environmental protection.

Washington Internships for Native Students

Research Libraries and Museums:

American Museum of Natural History Grants Program
The AMNH Grants Program offers modest short term awards to advanced students, postdoctoral trainees, and scientific researchers who are commencing their careers in the fields covered by AMNH. Frank M. Chapman Grants support and foster research in ornithology, both neontological and paleontological. Lerner-Gray Grants for Marine Research support marine zoology. Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Grants support research on North American fauna in any phase of wildlife conservation or natural history.

American Museum of Natural History Research Experience for Undergraduates
Every summer AMNH hosts two National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Site grants: Research in Evolution and Systematics and Earth Sciences and Astrophysics. In these programs, undergraduate students who have completed their freshman through junior years may work with AMNH scientists on one of an array of potential research projects that are available each year.

Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum
A limited number of grants-in-aid of research at the Lyndon B. Johnson Library are awarded by the LBJ Foundation semi-annually. The grant periods are June 1 through December 31 for the Fall term, and January 1 through August 31 for the Spring term.

Public and Private Laboratories and Research Centers:

AT&T Labs Research
AT&T Labs Research provides summer internship opportunities to advanced undergraduates.  Current research areas include: computing and communications foundations; networking and software systems; information and intelligent systems; and society and technology.

Pierce Cedar Creek Institute
The Undergraduate Research Grants for the Environment (URGE) program provides a unique opportunity for teams of undergraduate students and their faculty mentors for funding full-time summer research projects in the natural sciences, including biology, zoology, natural resource management,

Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE)
The WISE Program is co-sponsored by several professional engineering societies and the National Science Foundation.  The Program is open to students in engineering or technology and policy programs who are in their junior or senior year of undergraduate studies or in graduate school (environmental science, chemistry, and geology).

Think Tanks:

Carnegie Institute of Washington Summer Scholars Program
The Geophysical Laboratory and the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institute of Washington offer ten-week summer research internships.  Undergraduate students will have opportunities to conduct research in the geosciences, planetary sciences and astronomy, and related chemical sciences.

The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences Summer Internships and Cooperative Education Programs
The Hamner's summer internship program exposes students to various facets of on-going research projects, including literature review, conduct of experiments, data analysis, and interpretation of results. The Hamner cooperative education program gives undergraduate students the opportunity to integrate their academic studies with related job experience at The Hamner.

Sigma Xi
The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years. The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.
