Campus Message: Review of 2019 Findings & Planning Reposting

The 5th myGVSU Campus Climate Survey was administered in Fall 2019. At the request of the University Academic Senate, results of the survey have been removed from this website until a task force provides recommendations to Vice President Jesse M. Bernal regarding next steps. For now, the results have been removed from this website; however, it is expected that summary findings will be posted again on this website by December 2020.

A primary concern is the lack of data collected on two communities, rendering the data incomplete. Those questions were: “Which term best describes your sexual orientation?” and  “What is your current relationship status?”

In consultation with several leadership groups representing the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the GVSU advisory committee for the survey, there was consensus that Grand Valley needs a complete and accurate picture of our campus community. Therefore, the university is making two commitments: (1) focus groups will be hosted for members of the LGBTQ+ community; and, (2), while the survey is typically administered every 4-5 years, the the 6th iteration of the survey will be scheduled early for either Fall 2020 or Winter 2021. Timing will depend on the continuing impact of COVID-19.

It is expected that the additional focus groups will assist in capturing the stories that were missed in the 2019 survey and the recommendations of the University Academic Senate will help to inform the faculty, staff, and student Action Groups that will be formed in Summer 2020 and plans for the 2021-2022 next administration.
