The Knowledge Market is here to support students in partnership with faculty and staff across the university. Students are referred to us by faculty, advisors, success coaches, other peer learning services, and many other folks with whom they have formed a connection at GVSU. We are happy to come to your department meetings and events to talk about our services and the ways we can support students.

Services
Service Presentations
We are happy to come to your class, meeting, or event to deliver a 10-minute presentation on Knowledge Market services. We can tailor our presentation to a student or faculty/staff audience. Our highly trained student consultants and tutors work one-on-one or in small groups to help with your class content, library research, writing, oral presentations, digital projects. Library Research Center
The Library Research Center offers peer support with library research at both the Valley and City Campuses, as well as online. Research consultants can help students brainstorm ideas, find information, evaluate sources, write annotated bibliographies, and create citations. Digital Creator Lab
The Digital Creator Lab (DCL) is located at both the Valley and City Campuses. Digital literacy consultants offer in-person and online support for students working on digital projects such as videos, digital presentations, and podcasts. Writing Center
The Fred Meijer Center for Writing, with locations at the Valley and City campuses, is a peer service available to assist you with writing for any of your classes. Writing consultants, who are fellow GVSU students, are trained to help you with all stages of your writing process, from brainstorming to organizing to editing your papers. Simply bring an idea, prompt, or draft of your paper along with the assignment sheet to any of the Center's locations. The Center's services are free and you can drop in and work with a consultant or make an appointment. Speech Lab
GV's Speech Lab empowers communicators to shape their lives, professions, and society through confident and effective public presentations. Speech consultants, who are fellow GVSU students, complete a nationally certified training program that prepares them to assist with all parts of the speechmaking process including: choosing a topic, organizing your thoughts, and practicing presentations. A 30-minute session with a Speech Lab consultant will help you excel in your speech writing and delivery. The Speech Lab is located in the Knowledge Market in the Mary Idema Pew Library (Allendale), and in the Learning Commons in the Steelcase Library (downtown Grand Rapids). The Speech Lab's services are free for all Grand Valley students. Tutoring and Reading Center
Free tutoring and academic assistance are available to all GVSU students. You can use drop-in hours or make appointments in the Tutoring and Reading Center, located in Henry Hall 112, or you can stop by one of the content-specific drop-in tutoring centers on campus when they are open for questions and homework help. Class Support from the Library Research Center
The Library Research Center provides in-class support by request. Research consultants work with students one-on-one or in small groups to help them think through research assignments and develop information literacy skills. Research consultants can help with any of the following:
- Brainstorming and topic development
- Finding quality information that meets assignment requirements
- Evaluating sources for credibility and relevance
- Integrating research
- Creating annotated bibliographies
- Citing sources and avoiding plagiarism
Classroom visits work best when students are familiar with their assignment. While research consultant visits often take place after a librarian has taught an instruction session, we also provide independent support. We can customize our visits to meet your needs.

Class Support from the Digital Creator Lab
Podcast booths:
We are happy to help students in your courses as they work on digital projects. If you'd like your students to visit the Digital Creator Lab to record podcasts, please arrange for students to schedule their own visits. We have one reserved podcast booth at each of our locations, and the limited space prevents us from being able to host entire classes at once.
Class visits:
The University Libraries offer instruction in digital literacy, similar to the instruction we provide regarding information literacy. Structured Learning Assistance
Structured Learning Assistance (SLA) is a form of peer-led supplemental instruction that is available in some high-risk courses at GVSU. Supplemental instruction is a form of peer-tutoring that focuses on collaboration, group learning, and interaction to help students succeed in historically difficult courses. In their SLA sessions, students are provided with course-specific learning and study strategies like note-taking, test-taking, reading skills, and more while also engaging in structured review and study time with a group of their peers.
The goal of our SLA program is to help students build foundational knowledge and skills that will improve their course performance and help them through graduation.
