Description
The family vacation was becoming an American staple in the first half of the 1900s. The Black middle class was growing and expanding north and midwest at this same time, but segregation kept Black families from enjoying the same hotels, restaurants, and resorts as their white counterparts. To address this need, Black entrepreneurs established resort communities in West Michigan, including Woodland Park in Newaygo County. In a live Zoom webinar, Author Dianna Cross Toran shares the history and generations of stories from Woodland Park, where her family has vacationed at "the cottage" since 1947.
This event also appears on the main events calendar tagged as history, int100, int201, memoir, michigan, race, and recreation.
