Job Summary

The Telecommunications Specialist-Data Networks is responsible for management, installation, trouble shooting and preventative maintenance of the University Data Networks.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for data network management systems, including selection, installation, and maintenance.
  • Responsible for writing specifications for data network management software and hardware.
  • Design, write bid specifications, implement data network installations and monitor vendor compliance.
  • Assists professional staff, Tech Group, outside technicians and contractor/vendors with system planning, project management, installation and implementation, trouble shooting, and problem resolution related to the data networks.
  • Assists professional staff in preparing project specifications, implementation and final performance check out.
  • Provides back-up support for Telecommunications Specialist – Voice Networks Technician.
  • Supervise student employees.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Assembles and installs data network components and other communications equipment as required.  Checks installed equipment for proper operation.
  • Installs and repairs communication wiring/cables, splices cables, waterproofs cables, and similar duties.  Performance of these duties may require working in tunnels or on ladders.
  • Operates computer assisted design equipment in support of data networks.
  • Specifies, trains for and monitors the use of test equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance to users to determine system needs and cost.
  • Ascertains equipment malfunctions using industry approved testing procedures, locates and diagnoses the nature of defect, and repairs malfunctions.
  • Maintain data communication parts inventory/records; requisitions parts and equipment according to procedures.
  • Update Network Management System with moves, adds and deletion of network connected devises used on University campuses and remote locations.
  • Maintains accurate records of software and appropriate hardware setting, stating equipment location and features, as-built drawings of Data Network systems.  Documents work performed.
  • Responsible for maintaining skill level and knowledge of developments within the field by participation in training opportunities, studying manuals, and reading journals and technical publications.
  • Provides technical assistance to users to determine system needs and cost.
  • Updates Network Management System with moves, adds and deletion of network connected devises used on University campuses and remote locations.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate supplemented by an associate degree in electronics of data communications or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum of four years of comprehensive data installation and repair facility running local and metropolitan area networks.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and                attendance records.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers.
  • Working knowledge of electricity and electronics and sophisticated electronic testing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex electronic equipment schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work harmoniously with vendor/contractors in implementing various projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to physically perform the duties of the job such as lifting equipment, laying wires in tunnels, etc.
  • Ability to work under inclement weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Substantial experience in construction of wire plant for voice, data and fiber.
  • Experience in telephone line, trunk circuits and basic telephony principals.
  • Experience in basic video and audio technology.
  • Familiar with principles of compressed video distance learning systems.
  • Experience in PC, printer and related equipment problem diagnostics.

Supervision Received:

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor.  Much of the work is self-initiated.  Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility. .

Supervision Exercised:

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
