Kolby's Commitment to People, Equity, and Culture

What aspects of PEC’s mission and/or work most excite or inspire you?
I’m most inspired by PEC’s commitment to fostering a culture of belonging, equity, and continuous growth. The emphasis on people-first practices resonates with me deeply, especially the way PEC centers humanity in its approach to leadership and workplace culture. I’m excited by the opportunity to contribute to an environment where voices are heard, differences are celebrated, and growth is intentional, both professionally and personally.

Please share a moment in your personal or professional journey that deepened your commitment to equity and inclusion.
One defining moment in my professional journey was supporting a recruitment process that led to hiring a candidate who had faced multiple barriers to employment. Seeing how inclusive hiring practices changed that individual’s life and positively impacted the team dynamic, solidified my belief in equitable access and representation. It reminded me that HR is not just policy and compliance; it’s about transforming lives through intentional and inclusive decision-making.

How do your lived experiences or core values shape your approach to this work?
Growing up in a working-class family and being a black woman, I’ve experienced both the challenges and power of access and inclusion. These lived experiences fuel my passion for advocating for those whose voices are often overlooked. My core values—integrity, empathy, and empowerment—guide every interaction I have. I believe in meeting people where they are, listening actively, and helping build bridges where there might be barriers.

What is a hope or vision you carry for your time with PEC?
My hope is to contribute to a community where every colleague feels seen, supported, and valued. I envision PEC as a space where courageous conversations lead to actionable change and where every initiative reflects a deep respect for the diverse identities and experiences that make up GVSU. I’m excited to be part of a team that not only talks about equity but actively builds systems that support it.
