Professor Lingwood teaches courses on Islamic civilization, Islamic imperial history, and modern Iran. His approach to classroom instruction emphasizes student analysis of primary source materials, which, in turn, facilitates interactive lectures and student-driven discussions. Professor Lingwood's research explores the intersection of politics and religion, specifically Islamic mysticism (Sufism), in late-medieval and early-modern Iran, especially as it is reflected in classical Persian literature.
