On-Campus & Near-Campus Projects - City Campus
The GVSU City Campus is located in the heart of Grand Rapids. We appreciate that our community is improving and expanding, and have compiled some of the on-going projects in the neighborhood to help keep everyone informed. Some projects listed below will be GVSU campus projects (large-scale construction and/or parking lot projects), but we will also share nearby city and road projects as we become aware of them.
Annual Events That May Impact Grand Rapids Campus
Throughout the course of the year there are a few annual events that may close streets near campus for a short period of time:

9/21/26:
Lane closures for road and bridge work are scheduled for 3 a.m. Tues, 9/22 through Monday, 9/28 on southbound US-131 from Ann Street to Pearl Street. The ramp from southbound US-131 to eastbound I-196 is scheduled to close TONIGHT between 3 a.m. and 7 p.m. The ramp from Pearl Street/Scribner Avenue to US-131 is open to eastbound I-196 only through October 30.

- SB US-131 exit ramp to Wealthy Street: Closed Monday, October 5 at 9:00 a.m. through Friday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m.
- NB US-131 exit ramp to Cherry Street: Closed Monday, October 12 at 9:00 a.m. through Friday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m.
- NB US-131 entrance ramp from Market Avenue: Reopens Thursday, October 15 at 3:00 p.m.
- NB US-131 right lane closure from MLK Avenue to Market Avenue from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- SB US-131 entrance ramp from Pearl Street: Reopens Thursday, October 16 at 3:00 p.m.

Please see the following update regarding upcoming traffic impacts for the freeway lighting project:
- Northbound US-131 right lane closure from MLK Avenue to Pearl Street from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 14.
- Northbound US-131 exit ramp to Cherry Street will be closed from 9:00 a.m. on Monday October 12 to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16.
- Southbound US-131 exit ramp to Wealthy Street will reopen at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16.
- Southbound US-131 entrance ramp from Pearl Street will reopen at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16.
- Northbound US-131 entrance ramp from Market Avenue will reopen at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16.

Fall 2026 - work to start on Watson and Front Lot parking lot kiosks to complete project.
9/18/26: update: Watson lot south parking lot work will take place from 9/23 to approximately 10/2. Multiple parking spaces near entrance will be closed/coned for duration of the work in this area. Work to involve moving light pole, curb work, parking kiosk installation and partial lot resurfacing/restriping. Work will move to the north end on 10/5 and will take about 10 days to complete (similar scope of coning spaces for curb work, kiosk install and resurfacing/striping).
10/8/26: updated schedule:
- 10/13: existing gate removal, remove existing curb and flatwork, directional bore and hydrovac work
- 10/14: Finish directional bore if needed; conduit work.
- 10/15-10/16: Concrete curbs, flatwork and bump posts
- 10/19-20: Asphalt patching; allow for weather delays.
Seward Ramp Lighting Project
November 2026
Duration: Approx 2 weeks

This November we will be changing the light fixtures in the Seward Ramp. The new fixtures will be LED and motion-activated for energy savings. The project will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. The contractors may close off certain areas as needed while they are working, but the ramp will remain open during this project.
