Meet the Early Career Teacher Mentors
Carolyn Ballard
Carolyn has spent 35 of her nearly 50-year career as an educator in Battle Creek. Her roles have included principal, teacher at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, adjunct professor, mentor coach supervisor and intern teacher supervisor at Western Michigan University, adjunct professor at Miller College in Battle Creek, and adult lead in GVSU's rep4 program. Since 2002, Carolyn has been the program administrator for the after-school program I.M.P.A.C.T (Inner-city Music Proving Arts Can Teach) at the Music Center of South Central Michigan. She designed I.M.P.A.C.T. to offer free music lessons to youth in grades 3-6. Carolyn is also the manager for the Sojourner Truth Youth Choir, a community outreach component of I.M.P.A.C.T. for children ages 7 and up.
Dana Creevy
Dana has an M.S. in Curriculum & Instruction, has been a GVSU Clinical Instructor in CECI for almost five years, and has mentored Battle Creek Early Career Teachers for five years. She has been married to her husband for 25 years, has three daughters, enjoys traveling, volunteering, and spending time with friends and family. Dana has a passion for education and helping teachers become passionate about their work and their students.
Cathy Stevens
Cathy has been in the education field for over 30 years, 27 of those teaching in Kentwood Public Schools. She spent 6 years at the middle school level teaching English, social studies, physical education, and life skills. At the high school level, she taught health and physical education for grades 9 -12. During her time at the high school, she also spent 15 years as an Assistant Athletic Director.
Liz Winter
Liz graduated from Hope College with a double major in English for Secondary Education and Spanish. She then spent ten years working in Chicago Public Schools teaching English, Writing, Spanish, and AP Literature and Composition. During that time, she spearheaded a teacher mentoring program through the Office of New Schools. Additionally, Liz spent five years as the high school mentor chair for the Guitars Over Guns Organization in Chicago, designing, instructing, and facilitating meaningful experiences for high school students and mentors. Liz has also written AP standards-based curriculum and reading comprehension lessons for online coursework.
In addition to mentoring ECTs, as a Visiting Faculty member of CECI, Liz is also leading the Early Career Teacher PLC, as well as supervising BCPS teacher interns.
