We've connected with colleagues at GVSU and with practitioners across the state (and beyond!) to offer a variety of workshops and webinars to assist educators as they continue to move teaching and learning forward. While some may be suited for specific teachers, administrators, or support staff, all offerings are free to all educators.

Description

Special Education Coffee Hour session are designed to provide relevant and practical information across a broad range of topics to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. Information will be shared, and resources and tools will be provided that assist educational staff in providing compliant special education programs and services with high quality student outcomes.

Presenter Bio(s)

Jan Weckstein is the Special Education Consultant for Grand Valley State University’s Charter Schools Office. She was formerly the Deputy Director of the MDE-Office of Special Education. Prior to that Jan served in numerous roles in public education including ISD Assistant Superintendent for Special Education, Compliance Director, Supervisor and Principal. She also served as a local district Director of Special Education and taught both general education and special education classes over her 30+ year career. Jan holds an M.Ed. from GVSU in Special Education Administration, an M.A. from MSU in Curriculum and an undergraduate from EMU in English and Special Education. Jan is a Past-President of the Michigan Association of Administrators of Special Education (MAASE) and the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children (MCEC). In 2011 she was awarded the Murray O. Batten Humanitarian Award, A MAASE award presented annually each December to a peer exemplifying the characteristics of Leadership, Honesty, Integrity, and Dedication.

Nichole Moore serves as the Graduate Program Director for the Special Education Administration Program in Educational Leadership at Grand Valley State University. Before working at GVSU, she served in PK-12 teaching and administrative roles for over 20 years in public schools, initially as a special education teacher and then as a general education and special education administrator at the building and central office level.  Over the past five years, she has committed most of her professional learning to studying and engaging in Cognitive Coaching and the Adaptive Schools work through Thinking Collaborative. Nichole has actively served in professional organizations in the state of Michigan.  She has served in the presidential line for the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children (2016-2020) and the Michigan Association for Administration of Special Education (2018-2021). More recently, she was selected to serve on the Alumni Board of Directors for Grand Valley State University and continues to serve on the Leadership Development Committee for the National Council for Exceptional Children.

SCECHs Available
