Inquiry-Based Learning ELA Series

This series was designed by Van Andel Institute and is aimed at infusing classrooms with engaging, hands-on instruction that promotes critical and creative thinking.

Audience: K-5* Teachers, 6-8* Teachers, Specials Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Support Staff

*Concurrent sessions will focus on either grade-levels K-5 or 6-8

Stop Creating Lesson Plans: Start Creating Learning Experiences

Lesson plans are boring; learning experiences are memorable. In this session, take a traditional ELA lesson and transform it into a memorable, inquiry-based learning experience. Share strategies for managing a rich learning environment and continually strengthening habits of mind. Leave with tools and strategies to apply this transformative process to any lesson plan.

Where’s the Proof? Reasoning and Evidence in ELA

Using sound reasoning built from solid evidence—this is the hallmark of lucid thought. But how can we use reading and writing effectively to teach this critical skill? In this session, explore how to encourage logical thought and clear thinking in the ELA classroom. Learn specific strategies to help your students develop their abilities to use reasoning and evidence well.

Introducing Ben Talsma

Ben Talsma has spread a love of learning to students of all ages over the course of 16 fabulous years in education. In addition to teaching, he has built a STEAM program to cultivate a new generation of innovators, while also supporting a plethora of afterschool activities. Ben is thrilled to be working with VAI as a Learning Solution Specialist to help teachers around the world improve the lives of their students.

Introducing Jamie MacPherson

Jamie MacPherson has 14 years of experience teaching developmental kindergarten, kindergarten, and fourth grade. During her time as an educator, Jamie worked closely with VAI as her school transformed their science program to better meet the needs of 21st century learners. Inspired by the way inquiry-based instruction positively impacted her students, Jamie was eager join VAI as a Learning Solutions Specialist and become a part of their mission to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in classrooms everywhere.
