About Us
The GVSU Boxing Club is a a co-ed team all about pushing limits and learning the sport in a supportive space. Whether you want to get in shape, pick up new skills, or step into the ring, we focus on solid fundamentals, safe training, and helping everyone grow at their own pace. Beginners and experienced boxers are equally welcome.
We are more than just a club, we are a team. Members build resilience, confidence, and strong connections while training together. From fitness to competition, we represent Grand Valley with pride and bring the discipline and grit of boxing into every part of life.

If you have trouble finding us, head down the stairs to the left of the pool, walk straight down the hallway, and take the first left. Our room will be on the right-hand side, about halfway down the hall.

Coaches
Assistant Coach - Sarah Rae
Sarah Rae first joined GVSU Boxing as a student-athlete in 2015 and quickly became a dedicated member of the team. After graduating, she returned to the club as a coach in 2021, bringing years of experience and a passion for developing new boxers. Sarah is committed to helping athletes build confidence, sharpen their skills, and carry the discipline of boxing into every part of life.
Head Coach - Dennis Shimmell
Dennis Shimmer has been shaping boxers since 1997 and became GVSU’s head coach in 2017. He also teaches the boxing class on campus, giving students hands-on experience in the sport. In 2023, Dennis earned Coach of the Year for his leadership and impact, and he continues to guide the team with a focus on growth, discipline, and competitive success.
USIBA Nationals
About
USIBA Nationals is the biggest stage in college boxing, and every year GVSU sends athletes to represent our school. Nationals have been held in places like Houston and Georgia, and this year the tournament is in Las Vegas. Joining the club means training with the team, building your skills, and earning the chance to step into the ring against the best college boxers in the country.
