Academy Only One in Country to Offer Extensive Mediation Training

The GVSU Police Academy is the only academy in the country to offer extensive mediation training!
The Grand Valley program provides 40 hours of interpersonal communication training (such as mediation and restorative practices), 30 in the classroom and 10 online. This is 32 more hours of training that is required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. This additional training provides our cadets with the necessary tools in mediation to de-escalate situations they will regularly face.
Thanks to Williamson Wallace, director of GVSU’s Criminal Justice Training program and Jennifer Marson-Reed, assistant professor of criminal justice at Grand Valley, for incorporating the additional mediation and restorative training into our program to make it one of a kind!
