Faculty Receive Grant to Offer New Cold Case Investigation Class

Carrie Buist, Billy Wallace, and Carlos Fossati of the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies were awarded a $9,000 Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center Innovation Grant. This grant will be used in part to purchase computers and scanners that will be used in SCCJLS's new Cold Case Investigation class.

In partnership with Michigan State Police, Dr. Buist and Professor Wallace, with a select group of students will organize, digitize and research case files of potentially decades' long cold cases in Michigan State Police's District 6 which includes 14 counties on Michigan's west side. Along with contributions from Mr. Fossati and various other MSP officers, the students will be taught practical application of theory, the importance of coping strategies, trauma-informed care, and more.

Most importantly, the ultimate goal in developing this partnership is to solve these cases and influence social justice in our communities and the lives of those most impacted by these unsolved crimes.
