Description

About:
Science on Tap is an opportunity for conversation, debate and interaction between scientists and the public while enjoying your favorite libation. Each month at the SpeakEZ Lounge, a knowledgeable expert hosts a discussion about a current scientific topic: cutting edge cancer detection techniques, climate change, Ebola virology, sex in the animal kingdom, Parkinson's disease, or brewing beer, to name just a few. This is a great chance to indulge your academic interests in a casual setting while enjoying great food and beverages.

This May:  What Happens When Beliefs Change
People sometimes change beliefs about social or scientific topics when they read information suggesting they are incorrect. In this talk I will discuss two things that happen when beliefs change: 1. People show very little awareness of these changes and appear to think their beliefs have not changed. 2. People show belief-based biases in their ability to evaluate arguments, and these biases change along with belief changes. Practical implications relating to current scientific and political issues will be discussed.
