Purpose

The purpose of the Historically Black College/University (HBCU) / Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Consortium is to collaborate, not compete, with HBCUs and HSIs to create greater opportunities for students from minoritized populations to find real, meaningful positions while simultaneously expanding talent pipelines in West Michigan.

GVSU offers several articulated course pathways between our HBCU and HSI partners for students to find a degree that fits their academic goals.

Give to the HBCU / HSI Pipeline Consortium Scholarship Fund

The HBCU/HSI Consortium Scholarship was established to assist students who transferred or graduate from institutions with a collaborative articulation agreement between Grand Valley State University with the cost of their education. This scholarship will prepare students for successful careers, and help diversify the talent pipeline for West Michigan employers.

Overview

1. Students begin their academic career at a HBCU or HSI, where they receive a strong educational foundation.

2. Students gain access to a broader portfolio of degree pathways through articulation agreements with Grand Valley State University.

3. Students gain real-world professional experience through immersion in local industries, preparing them to enter the workforce after graduation.

Approach

We are committed to providing a supportive, holistic approach to student success by building on the strengths of partner HBCUs and HSIs. In most cases, students will complete degrees from both their HBCU/HSI and GVSU. Students who choose to attend GVSU will be eligible for financial support, mentoring, and academic assistance. GVSU partnerships with local industries provide students with opportunities for professional learning and growth.

Format

Students may transfer to GVSU to complete their undergraduate degree, pursue an Articulated Collaborative Early Engagement (ACEE) undergraduate/graduate degree, or begin their GVSU studies at the graduate level.

Grand Valley State University faculty advisors will work with each student participating in the HBCU/HSI Consortium to customize a transfer plan that meets their educational objectives. Students are encouraged to meet with both their home institution and their GVSU advisors early in their academic career and throughout their learning journey.

Collaborator Opportunities

Become a Higher Education Collaborator

GVSU will partner with your HBCU or HSI to:

  • Identify curriculum equivalencies
  • Establish an articulation agreement that helps students to complete program requirements and enter the workforce as quickly as possible
  • Connect students with opportunities through paid industry internship, co-op, or graduate assistantships
  • Assist students with identifying financial resources
  • Coordinate campus visits

Become an Industry Collaborator

Industry partners can support students in the HBCU/HSI Consortium by:

  • Providing paid internship or co-op placements (undergraduate level)
  • Providing Industry-Sponsored Graduate Fellowships (graduate level)
  • Giving to the GVSU HBCU/HSI Consortium Scholarship Fund
  • Participating in campus visitations
  • Hosting facility tours
