Medical laboratory scientists are health care professionals who perform laboratory tests and analyses on biological specimens, like bodily fluids and tissues, to help diagnose, monitor, and treat diseases.

Overview

Medical laboratory science (MLS) plays a crucial role in the health care system by providing essential information to guide clinical decisions and enhance patient outcomes. This program prepares students for careers in hospital settings, but job opportunities exist within research, instrument training/sales, lab management, and education.

You will take courses in medical terminology, general biology, human genetics, and microbiology, and delve into anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, immunology, and various chemistry courses. The program also includes specialized MLS courses like clinical microbiology, hematology, transfusion medicine, molecular diagnostics, and clinical chemistry.

The program offers a strong curriculum, expert faculty, and clinical placements to prepare students for the ASCP Board of Certification exam. Students benefit from small class sizes, cohort experiences, and clinical rotations at hospital-affiliated laboratories. Courses are taught in the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences in Grand Rapids' medical mile, and the program is fully accredited, ensuring high educational standards.
