Literacy Coaching

Graduate Certificate

Online • 12 Credits

Literacy coaching is the practice of supporting educators in improving reading and writing instruction through collaborative guidance, modeling, and feedback to enhance student literacy outcomes.

Overview

Grand Valley's Literacy Coaching Certificate equips educators with the expertise in guiding teachers to improve literacy instruction through collaboration, data-driven practices, and reflective inquiry. Students develop skills in adult learning theory, analyzing student work, designing effective lessons, and leading professional learning communities to foster evidence-based teaching and continuous improvement.

Students explore foundational principles of literacy coaching and apply them through practicum experiences. Coursework begins with a focus on the theoretical and practical foundations of effective coaching. Through three practicum experiences, students gain hands-on expertise in literacy instruction, develop skills as reading and literacy specialists, and build leadership abilities for facilitating professional development.

Together, these experiences prepare educators to guide teachers in implementing evidence-based literacy practices and fostering collaborative learning communities.
