In Grand Valley's Engineering Graphical Communication Badge, engineering students will learn to sketch out engineering ideas in isometric and orthographic projections, properly dimension their sketches, communicate their design ideas via Computer-aided Design (CAD) drawings, write G code to convert their CAD designs into manufacturable parts using Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, and produce appropriately milled parts matching their CAD designs using bench mills.
The badge curriculum includes two required courses: Introduction to Engineering Graphics, and Introduction to CAD/CAM.
This badge is intended for anyone wishing to pick up drafting and computer-aided design. It is offered face-to-face in the evenings on Grand Valley's City Campus in Grand Rapids, or fully online, making it a flexible option for interested students.
Catalog information for this badge is available in the 2025-2026 Under Construction Catalog.
A digital badge, or badge, is a record of achievement that recognizes a student's completion of a coherent and meaningful academic experience. GVSU offers both credit and non-credit bearing badges as digital credentials. Credit-bearing badges include anywhere from 0.5 to 15 academic credits and may include additional noncredit criteria. Credit-bearing badges are also posted to the academic transcript.
This badge is intended for anyone wishing to pick up skills in drafting and computer-aided design. Both courses in this badge require pre-calculus Mathematics background - EGR 111 can be taken with a prereq of MTH 110. Students in MTH 122 or higher may take both courses in this badge concurrently.
