1. CLAS Voyage

Work on the CLAS Voyage is underway on target to launch in Fall 2025. This year, the Faculty Fellows and Kris Pachla will be focused on defining and creating rubrics for our High-Impact Practices, surveying current program offerings, collaborating to build a multidisciplinary Embarking Experience, and defining the skills which form the basis for the ePortfolio. The group will also be focused on designing and engaging faculty learning through FLCs and defining the first of the Voyage microcredentials. If you have interest in providing feedback or ideas for any of those key areas of the Voyage, reach out to Kris Pachla at [email protected] or fill out the Voyage question form.

A reminder that open office hours are next week for you to talk more with Dean Drake, Kris and the Fellows about the Voyage. Join them:

  • In Person on Monday, 9/12 in MAK B-4-243 from 2-3 p.m. or

  • Virtually on Thursday, 9/15 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Register to provide questions (or get the zoom link) at the Voyage Open Office Hours RSVP form

Finally, the college is hiring a project manager to help guide the work. You can find out more about the position at the Project Manager job description. Please disseminate to anyone you think might find this interesting.

 2. DEI-AB Webpage

The CLAS Dean’s Office has launched a webpage to highlight efforts in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEI-AB info on Provost’s website) across the College. The CLAS DEIA-AB webpage will be a place where units can announce their DEI-AB events and initiatives. The webpage will also feature DEI-AB resources (e.g., accessibility at GVSU), as well as videos and podcasts that are relevant to DEI-AB, broadly understood. In addition, it will be the place where people can learn more about the DEI-AB framework that will guide our efforts to advance the University’s commitment to educational equity.

3. CLAS TT Faculty Fall Election 2022 –Nomination Process

CLAS will hold fall elections to fill vacancies on tenure track faculty governance committees, both at the College and University levels. We need faculty to fill in as one-semester sabbatical replacements, and there are also full-term positions available that begin in fall 2022.

Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague to serve on a committee. Please note, individuals must accept nominations – whether made by self or by others – to appear on the ballot. Nominations are open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty in the college, however there are some restrictions related to unit eligibility and tenure requirements. The CLAS Faculty Governance website has more information about eligibility (and there is eligibility information on the nomination form itself), and a list of all standing committees, what they do, and when they meet.

The nomination period will open on Wednesday, September 7 and will close on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 (midnight).

Voting will occur from Thursday, September 15 - Thursday, September 22 (midnight)

TT Election information will be on the TT Faculty Governance & Elections site as well as on the CLAS TT Faculty Election Fall 2022 page which will show who has accepted nomination (updated each day of the nomination period. Nota bene: this is not an automatic process, please allow some time for these updates to show).

If you have any questions, please contact CLAS Faculty Council Chair, Sally Ross at [email protected]

Thank you.

4. Assessment suspended for academic year

The University Assessment Committee, with the support of Sean Lancaster, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Provost Mili, supports the suspension of assessment plan reporting and assessment plan review for the 2022-2023 academic year to ensure a smooth transition to a more effective and beneficial process.

This past academic year, the UAC spent significant time listening to the campus community, reviewing, and then proposing significant revision to our current assessment plan structure and reporting process. We want to have a process that benefits all stakeholders better, and we are engaged in that effort. The recommendations are forwarded to University Academic Senate (UAS) for consideration, and we anticipate support for the improvements to the process. Given the changes coming, we recognize the necessity and benefit to having programs pause reporting this year while waiting for the revised process to be approved and updates made to GVAssess.

UAC will keep campus informed about the upcoming process, once approved. UAC’s work this year is focused on implementing the improvements and building resources to better support all programs/units. UAC will reach out to you in early 2023 with instructions for revisions to assessment planning and reporting. We hope that the revisions allow all programs to focus on a small number of key student learning and student-centered outcomes that can best support the excellent work and desired improvements of each program.

The suspension of assessment plan reporting and assessment plan review only applies to the University Assessment Committee (UAC) program assessment reporting completed through GVAssess. Other assessment reporting, including Supplemental Writing Skills and General Education reporting, continues as usual.

5. Michigan Space Grant opportunities

Fellowship and Grant Opportunities through MSGC (Deadline November 16)

NASA’s Michigan Space Grants Consortium (MSGC) has just announced the next round of requests for proposals for Seed Grants, Program Grants and Undergraduate/Graduate Student Fellowships for the 2023-2024 funding cycle.

Deadline for applications is November 16, 2022. Awards will be announced in February 2023, and successful fellows and grantees may utilize the funds during May 2023-April 2024 period.

GVSU is one of 11 academic affiliate MSGC institutions in Michigan. Faculty, staff, and students may benefit from research and educational opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Aerospace, Space or Earth System Science. Please note that MSGC funds proposals in other disciplines – such as in Arts, Communication, Psychology, Philosophy, Medicine, and Movement Science that impact science education and human exploration of Earth and Space. Faculty and staff may apply for seed grants (especially suitable for all new faculty and select senior faculty who are initiating a new area of research), program grants to support educational and outreach activities (pre-college education, teacher training, and public outreach). Undergraduate and graduate students may seek fellowships to carry out research projects under the mentorship of GVSU faculty. The attached memo provides detailed grant/fellowship application guidelines.

For over 2 decades, GVSU faculty and students have built a solid record of obtaining MSGC fellowships and grants enriching the scholarship and education experience of our students and faculty – and many of the educational activities supported under the Program awards touch scores teachers and hundreds of students in our k-12 schools in west MI each year.

Questions? Please write to Bopi Biddanda, AWRI.

6. Student Success Series

There is a webpage devoted to the Student Success Series, which provides current information on all the events related to this series.

In less than two weeks, Dr. Tia Brown McNair will be back on campus. For anyone who missed her keynote address last week, you still have an opportunity to listen to that same presentation on Wednesday, September 14 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Grand River Room in the Kirkhof Center. Registration for this event

Following the keynote address will be a Fireside Chat on Wednesday, September 14 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Alumni House. The Fireside Chat will expand upon the keynote address and will focus on strategic leadership and actionable steps toward becoming an even more student-ready institution. The university commitments – an empowered educational experience, a culture of educational equity, and a lifetime of learning – will feature prominently in this important conversation. Faculty and staff in leadership roles are particularly encouraged to attend. Registration

7. Is your class or research project photogenic?

University Communications photographers regularly refresh our photo bank and know that among the most impactful and useful pictures are those where teaching is taking place outdoors or in interesting indoor settings on campus and in the community.  If you have something like this coming up, email time/date/place and a short description to [email protected], and we’ll aggregate our suggestions for University Communications.  New faculty are encouraged to consider this opportunity.
