2. CLAS representation on University Governance Committees
Reflecting on the winter faculty governance election, it is evident that CLAS faculty are willing to serve their colleagues through representation on CLAS and University Committees across campus. Thank you.

We do have two University governance committees in need of representation from CLAS.

The University Curriculum Committee (UCC) is in need of faculty to fill two 1-year appointments and one W24 sabbatical replacement position.

The University Assessment Committee (UAC) is looking to fill five 1-year positions for 2023-2024.

If you have an interest in serving on either of these committees, please contact Sally Ross ([email protected]), chair of CLAS Faculty Council.

The following message is from Julie Henderleiter ([email protected]) in Chemistry, the current UAC chair, who is happy to field questions about the committee:

"The University Assessment Committee (UAC) is in the process of redesigning the assessment process to make it more meaningful for programs.

In the fall, UAC will finalize planning and reporting and help programs design new assessment plans. In winter, we will review reports to provide feedback for programs, deans, and program directors.

Faculty do assessment all the time. We provide feedback to our students and reflect on what assessments tell us. You have the expertise you need already and can learn many great things from your colleagues. For those already involved in unit level assessment, please take the opportunity to learn more—and define—assessment at GVSU.

If you are interested in designing the new assessment process and shaping the future, please reach out to Sally Ross ([email protected]) about a one-year appointment on UAC."

3. CLAS Voyage

On May 4th, the CLAS Voyage team will be hosting a high-impact practice summit. The purpose of this summit will be to continue building interest and understanding, collaboratively, around high-impact practices, their characteristics, and the implementation of HIPs within CLAS. The event will include a student panel, discussion and ideation around our adopted characteristics list for high-impact practices, and an opportunity to reflect and share on what you currently do as faculty and what needs you might have as we scale high-impact practices across the college.

The summit will run in the Kirkhof Center from 10AM – noon, with an opportunity to participate in optional discussion from noon until 2PM.

Light breakfast, beverages, and lunch will be provided. If you are interested, please RSVP at this link

4. Inclusive Excellence Teaching Institute 2023

Virtual Three-Day Institute: May 11, May 23, June 8, 2023
Facilitators: Chasity Bailey-Fakhoury and Mirta Paola Leon

This year's virtual institute will be facilitated by Dr. Chasity Bailey-Fakhoury and Dr. Mirta Paola Leon and take place over three full days: May 11 (Thursday), May 23 (Tuesday), and June 8 (Thursday). The Institute will meet via Zoom from 9AM-3PM for each of the dates with a break for lunch. Registrants are expected to attend all meetings.

The Inclusive Excellence Teaching Institute is specifically designed to provide Affiliate and Tenure-Track faculty at all ranks with a transformative space to learn and strategize about inclusive excellence in teaching and learning. The Institute will encourage an atmosphere of cultural humility through the examination of social identity and bias. Motivational frameworks, barriers to learning for diverse student learners, and proactive strategies will also be introduced. Essential pedagogical approaches that promote an inclusive classroom environment will be modeled and explored. Through pre-assigned readings, access to a group Bb site, and facilitated discussions, participants will begin the process of transforming their courses/curriculum, units, and colleges.

For more information, please contact Chasity Bailey-Fakhoury at [email protected]. Registration is limited to 12 faculty. Register in Sprout
