MacKenzie Brokema

MacKenzie Brokema is a sophomore majoring in behavioral neuroscience with an emphasis in pre-physician assistant and a minor in Spanish. Aside from being the president and founder of the GVSU Plogging Club, MacKenzie is also a member of Hunger & Homelessness and the Pre-Physician Assistant Club.

MacKenzie founded the Plogging Club to address the environmental concerns in West Michigan. “Plogging” is a term that combines jogging with picking up litter. GVSU’s Plogging Club aims to combine sustainable living with a healthy lifestyle. The group goes out into the community to pick up trash, hosts fitness days at the Rec Center, and hosts upcycling events that turn previously useless items into something useful.

MacKenzie started the Plogging Club because she recognized that environmental changes need to be made, and she “wanted to be the person to make that change.'' She credits her Student Life involvement with helping her “maintain a social life while in college,” and she is proud of the impact her organization has had on the community.
