Detention Ponds at GVSU

Storm runoff temporarily becomes stored in detention ponds, reducing the immediate runoff into storm water sewers, and reducing the chance of erosion and flooding. They are designed to eventually release all the water and to not cause pooling. Generally they do not affect water quality but if the water is designed to be held for long periods of time it is possible.

Detention Pond at GVSU behind Laker Village

GVSU has many examples of detention ponds across campus, and according to a map on the campus website there are 5! These ponds are behind Laker Village or even in the center of campus and many students have no idea. Our goal is to educate students on the purpose for these installations. Below is the map of all green infrastructure on campus, hopefully you can spot them all!
