2026 Workshop #2

Padnos College of Engineering Outreach

4:00pm EST., Friday February 20th

Live at the DeVos Center, Grand Rapids Pew Campus.

Exploring the Night Sky

Come join the Padnos College of Engineering Outreach team for a hands-on, family-friendly design and build workshop focused on astronomy and timekeeping.

Participants will create a simple astrolabe, a historical instrument used to measure the height of stars and constellations in the night sky. Using a projected sky and a reference guide, participants will use their astrolabes to determine which month a particular sky represents, learning how people used the stars to tell time long before modern clocks.

All materials will be provided, and participants will take their astrolabes home with them.

All ages are welcome. Scissors, tape, hot glue, and other tools will be available. Younger participants may enjoy working with an adult helper.

This is a come-and-go workshop. Participants may join at any point during the session.
