Emeritus Faculty & Staff
Any retired faculty or staff member of the Grand Valley State University who has made a significant contribution to the university through a reasonable period of service is eligible for emeritus status, with an emeritus title usually conforming to that held at retirement. The President's recommendation to the Board of Trustees will be made after consultation with the appointing officer, colleagues and vice-president.
This recommendation may be made posthumously if all other criteria except retirement status have been met. In its sole judgment, the Board of Trustees reserves the right to revoke emeritus status. Emeriti will be appointed without compensation.
*deceased
1. Process
- For faculty, recommendations should be made to the dean by the retired faculty member's unit. Such recommendations should include a written rationale for the emeritus appointment. In turn, the dean would make a recommendation to the Provost. The Provost would ask the President to recommend to the Board of Trustees.
- For staff, recommendations should be made by the appointing officer of the retired staff member's unit. Such recommendations should include a written rationale for the emeritus appointment. In turn, the appointing officer would make a recommendation to their vice president. The vice president would ask the President to recommend to the Board of Trustees.
2. Minimum time at GVSU
- At least 15 years of service is expected to be considered for emeritus status.
- The President and/or the Board of Trustees may waive this requirement at their discretion.
3. Rationale
- The written rationale should include an explanation as to how the retired faculty or staff member has satisfied the "significant contribution" requirement. Colleagues and/or appointing officers should be able to demonstrate concrete, positive impacts of the faculty or staff member's work.
- Time at GVSU is not sufficient to warrant emeritus status.
4. Publicity and Benefits
- The list of emeritus faculty and staff would be maintained by the Human Resources office (with support from the Office of the Provost and other campus partners) and published online. Departments and colleges should not publish separate lists that may be inaccurate.
- Emeritus faculty and staff receive the same benefits as other retirees.
- Emeritus faculty and staff are encouraged to continue an active role at the university.
