Presidential Fellows 2.0

Building Capacity for Shared Leadership Across GVSU

Expanding upon the Presidential Fellows initiative launched in 2020, the program now invites both faculty and staff to engage in transformative, cross-functional leadership experiences that drive institutional progress. This leadership initiative designed to cultivate the next generation of enterprise leaders at Grand Valley State University.

As higher education faces increasing complexity and rapid change, the expanded program equips participants with the skills, strategic insights, and collaborative mindset necessary to navigate challenges and shape the university’s future. By fostering a network of engaged professionals across disciplines and departments, the program breaks down traditional silos, leveraging the diverse talents and expertise of GVSU employees.

This initiative reflects GVSU’s deep commitment to professional growth, career advancement, and a culture of innovation. Through hands-on experience and meaningful contributions to university-wide initiatives, Fellows will play a critical role in shaping the next phase of the Reach Higher strategy.

    • University 101/201: Insights from Senior Leadership – The SLT and other division leadership will facilitate immersive cohort experiences, offering a comprehensive exploration of university administration and core employee competencies. The experience intends to advance individual skills and knowledge or provide unique new experiences for the fellow.
    • Shared Professional Development – Each cohort of fellows will work with a Presidential Fellows lead to determine a shared professional development experience that supports new and experienced higher education leaders to learn more about innovative strategies, trends, and best practices.

University Relations (Vice President Behler)

In 2019, the University Leadership Development (U LEAD) Task Force of the University Academic Senate provided key recommendations to enhance leadership development at Grand Valley State University. In response, President Mantella launched the Faculty Fellows Program, which has since supported at least two part-time fellows in collaborating with university leadership to advance strategic initiatives through a two-year immersive experience. This latest effort builds upon that foundation, reinforcing GVSU’s ongoing commitment to cultivating leadership across the institution. A special thank you to the Leading Lakers cohort team—Keigh-Cee Bell, Lindsey Burns, Meāgan Treadway, and Kelley Senkowski—whose 2025 SLT Mentor Fellowship Pods pitch provided additional inspiration for this expansion.
