Born and raised in Toledo (north of Old State Line road he'd be a Michigander had the Toledo War gone in Michigan's favor), Greg attended the University of Toledo before and after a four year tour in the U.S. Army. He received a BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Political Science, Economics & Korean) in 1990.

After moving to Michigan just to go to graduate school Greg was too busy to think about moving on from Michigan, and no longer wants to. Michigan is a beautiful state, with plenty of things to do year round to keep me interested, he reports. After completing his MA in Political Science in 1995 he took a leave of absence from his graduate studies (returning in 1997 and completing in 2001) to take full time employment at the Michigan Public Health Institute. There he eventually rose to become a Senior Program Director. His group at the Institute focused on program evaluation, public health and health policy analysis, health-related demonstration projects, web-based public health information systems and applied research projects. Immediately prior to coming to Grand Valley, Greg spent two years working for the home office of Trinity Health as the system wide grant coordinator. He also founded the Michigan Journal of Public Health, a peer reviewed journal published twice a year by the Michigan Public Health Association.

Professor Greg Cline received his PhD in Political Science from Michigan State University in 2001. His focus then and since has been on state and community-level social change efforts, with a primary focus on the issue areas of health and public health.

Dr. Cline's Curriculum Vitae

  • To relax, I enjoy ... being with my family, spending as much time out of doors as possible, and reading history, biography, military history and science fiction.
  • My wife and I share ... three children, a few dogs, one or more transitory outdoor cats, and a collection of films from almost every era of filmmaking since the introduction of sound.
  • If I had to leave the state, I would miss ... Michigan's annual firearm deer season each autumn.
  • People are surprised to learn that I ... can speak Korean
