Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 is pleased to offer Continuing Education Units (CEU) through the Grand Valley State University School of Social Work. Information listed below complies with GVSU marketing requirements. You can register for the conference here.
Keynote: Working with Youth and Families: A Relational Approach
This keynote is for all participants (BEGINNER). It is eligible for 2.5 CEUs and will be a lecture-based delivery.

Course objectives:

Participants will learn to conceptualize youth's behavior through the lens of entitlement theory.

Participants will demonstrate the ability to identify salient working models and rules of living in others.

Participants will be able to implement treatment interventions that can change limiting rules of living and working models.

Participants will be able to recognize and effectively manage defense mechanisms in youth.

Participants will learn to conceptualize their own behavior through the lens of entitlement theory.

Participants will demonstrate the ability to identify salient working models and rules of living in themselves.

Participants will understand how their own rules of living and working models interact with those of youth and other staff.

Participants will develop strategies to assure their own limiting rules of living do not interfere with youths' growth.
Intential Inclusion of Indigenous Families in Service Provision
This workshop is for all participants (BEGINNER). It is eligible for 1.25 CEUs and will be a lecture-based presentation that includes group discussion.
Course objectives:
- Engage Native American families in residential or community based settings.
- Identify the cultural aspects of the engagement of Native American populations in service provision.
- Identify the differences between Native American and American Indian populations.
- Discuss the higher risk factors for youth in tobacco, alcohol and substance abuse.
- Understand the higher prevalence of active suicidality in Native American and American Indian populations.
Engagement and Cultivation of Safe Spaces for 2-SLBGTQIA or SOGIE Youth in Residential and Community-Based Programming
This workshop is for all participants (BEGINNER). It is eligible for 1.25 CEUs and will be lecture and discussion based and include multimedia.
Course objectives:
- Discuss the 2-SLBGTQIA/SOGIE acronyms and the significance of each.
- Identify resources for support and training on an ongoing basis.
- Demonstrate an increased awareness of agency policies and procedural incidences of inclusion in their work setting.
Meeting the Needs of At-Risk and Justice Involved Youth and Families
This presentation is for all participants (BEGINNER). It is eligible for 1.5 CEUs. The presentation will include lecture, group and panel discussions.
Course objectives:
- Juvenile justice and other youth-serving professionals will examine their own biases; when collaborating, approaching, and engaging parents who have children on probation.
- Understand the importance of family involvement in addressing the needs of youth of color who have emotional and behavioral challenges due to unresolved trauma.
- Describe and discuss the induced stress associated with distorted images through media on vulnerable boys and young men of color and its impact on how they see themselves the world around them, and their future.
- Provide guidance and examples on how juvenile justice serving professionals can effectively engage and improve family involvement in the juvenile justice system process.
To register for CEUs, select "YES" in the appropriate field for registration. An additional $15.00 will be applied for interested participants.
In order to earn credit, participants must attend and participate in ALL conference sessions. Partial credit is not available. Following each session, participants must report to the registration table to have the paperwork completed. At the end of the training, all forms and evaluations must be brought to the registration table located outside the Loosemore Auditorium. Certificates of completion will be sent to participants via email 4-6 weeks after the training event.
Grand Valley State University School of Social Work, an accredited social work education program, is authorized by Administrative Rule 338.2965 to award Michigan social work continuing education contact hours.
