Connecting students, communities, and nature.
Groundswell is a coalition of community partners creating opportunities for hands-on environmental learning in West Michigan. We support educators who want to move beyond the classroom walls and teach students through exploring their own communities. Groundswell provides high-quality teacher training and funding for inquiry-based, student-led projects. Our students engage in real-world problem solving by identifying an environmental need in their community and working with local experts to solve that need.

Groundswell won an Innovative Education Award from Underwriters Laboratories in 2018. This award recognizes organizations utilizing innovative approaches to create positive impacts on the community. The annual award is presented to five non-profits throughout the U.S. and Canada who advance E-STEM, sustainable communities, and youth empowerment. The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) launched the UL Innovative Education Award in 2014 to invest in programs that demonstrate effective educational benefits and community engagement in linking environmental focus to STEM education.
