"AL, Logical" is a math fantasy graphic novel created by the father-son team of John Golden, mathematics professor, and Xavier Golden, '23, an art teacher at Grand Haven High School.

They said the book delivers an inspiring and creative message.

“Humans are good at problem-solving," John Golden said. "When people have the chance to find out that they're good at it — if given the opportunity — they'll enjoy it.”

"AL, Logical" began as Xavier’s senior project while he was a Meijer Honors College student. The project continued after he graduated, as Xavier and John finished planning the graphic novel and produced the first chapter.

They co-wrote the book and Xavier completed the pencil sketches, inks, colors and letterings. With a grant from the GVSU Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, they were able to print a few copies.

“The book is ultimately about someone who learns that they can do new, challenging things," Xavier said. "More specifically, it's about a student learning that, despite what she first thinks, she is a math person. It's her curiosity and creativity that make her a math person.”

Natural Math Publishing picked up the book, and Xavier redid the lettering and illustrations. The Goldens made edits and created a Kickstarter campaign to fund the publishing. In early March, they reached the Kickstarter’s deadline and exceeded the funding goal.

Xavier and John said they believe it’s important for everyone, especially children, to have access to their book and its message. With Natural Math Publishing and the Kickstarter success, they aim to have a digital copy available for everyone at any price.
