Internal and External Deadlines

Many national scholarships and prestigious fellowships require University nomination or endorsement in order to apply. In these cases, GVSU establishes campus deadlines for Declaration of Intent to Apply and, later, Internal Submission of Materials, that are several weeks or months in advance of the submission deadline posted by the awarding organization’s website. The tables below list the fellowships that have preliminary campus deadlines for Declaration of Intent to Apply and Internal Submission of Application.

Students or recent graduates who seek nomination for any of these awards should schedule an individual meeting with the Fellowships advisor. Students who enter the nomination pipeline for these awards will be added to a mailing list with specific guidance and instruction on the application processes.

Other Deadlines

The following major awards do not require a nomination. Students who intend to apply for the following awards can work with our office to prepare their applications. We recommend that students begin working on their applications 6-8 weeks BEFORE the deadlines listed on the sponsoring organization's website. This allows students to receive multiple rounds of feedback on their essays and prepare their applications. It also provides faculty and staff adequate time to write letters of recommendation.

Fellowships that require application essays for which students should seek feedback repeatedly throughout the drafting process from the Fellowships Office and the Writing Center include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Payne, Rangel, Pickering
  • Rangel Summer Enrichment Program
  • Schwarzman Scholars
  • Knight-Hennessy
  • Gates Cambridge Scholarship (post graduate)
  • National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
  • IIE Gilman International Scholarship
  • IIE Freeman-Asia Scholarship
  • PPIA (Public Policy and International Affairs) Summer Fellowships
  • Critical Languages Scholarship Program
  • CBYX (Germany)
  • DAAD-RISE and other DAAD opportunities (Germany)
  • Amgen Scholars
  • NOAA Hollings
  • US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes
  • Rotary Peace Fellows
  • Peace Corps

If you're interested in applying for any of these opportunities, please complete our Interest Form and we will be in touch with next steps.
