My name is Dr. Aaron Haight, and I’m the Dean of Students at GVSU. You may be wondering “What IS a Dean of Students”? I support non-academic student life, promote student welfare, and act as a bridge between the student body and University leadership. I’m excited to welcome you to the 2026-2027 academic year!   

Summer may be over, but there is plenty to look forward to this fall. Follow Grand Valley’s social media accounts and check the GVSU events calendar to stay connected to programs and events happening across campus. Join us at Campus Life Night on Sunday, August 30th, where you can explore GVSU’s more than 400 Registered Student Organizations. It's the start of your opportunity to build community, grow, and find your place on campus.

We nurture this environment by balancing respect for the rights and responsibilities of the individual, and the rights, responsibilities, and interests of the University community. This fall, the November elections will spark important conversations and debate around issues at the local, state, and national levels. Whatever your viewpoint, GVSU is committed to freedom of expression and respectful, non-threatening dialogue. Be curious. Ask questions. Listen to perspectives different from your own and be respectful—especially when you disagree. Our university is a marketplace of ideas, and when differences arise, use your voice to engage others peacefully and constructively.  

GVSU has a strong tradition of supporting civil, political, and interfaith dialogue. I encourage you to explore the programming and opportunities offered by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, Sylvia and Richard Kaufman Interfaith Institute, and Padnos/Sarosik Center for Civil Discourse.
