Credit Card Fraud Stats

July 21, 2016

  • A recent study on credit card fraud shows the problem is bad and getting worse. Here are the scary stats:
    • 30% of debit, credit and pre-paid cardholders experienced fraud in the past 5 years. 17% say they have fallen victim multiple times.
    • Nations with the highest proportion of victims are Mexico (56%), Brazil (49%) and the US (47%). The US has made the “top three” list several years in a row thanks to a slow roll-out of EMV chip cards.
    • 54% of consumers globally exhibit at least one risky behavior, such as carrying a written PIN with the card.
