Below is a checklist to help keep you safe and mitigate risks while traveling.

Pre-Travel

  1. Update Your Devices: Ensure all your devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet) are updated with the latest software and security patches.
  2. Backup Your Data: Backup important data (photos, documents, contacts) on external drives or secure cloud storage ex. OneDrive.
  3. Enable Strong Authentication: Use strong passwords combined with two-factor authentication on all devices/accounts.
  4. Turn Off Auto-Connect: Disable features that automatically connect your devices to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks.
  5. Prepare for Physical Security: Invest in a high-quality laptop lock and consider privacy screens for your devices.

During Travel

  1. Use Secure Wi-Fi Connections Avoid using public Wi-Fi hot spots for sensitive transactions.
  2. Use a VPN: Connect through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  3. Be Cautious with Public Charging Stations: Use a battery pack or ensure charging stations do not access data by using a data blocker.
  4. Disable Bluetooth Connectivity: Keep Bluetooth disabled when not in use to avoid unauthorized access.
  5. Monitor Your Accounts for Suspicious Activity: Monitor your accounts for any unauthorized access or transactions.
  6. Secure Your Physical Devices: Always keep your devices with you and never leave them unattended in public places.

Post Travel

Post Travel

  1. Change Passwords: Change your passwords for key accounts in case they were compromised during travel.
  2. Check for Updates Again: Make sure your devices are still running the most current software, as vulnerabilities can be exploited while you are distracted.
  3. Review App Permissions: Review and adjust app permissions in case you temporarily changed them during your travels.
  4. Check Your Financial Statements: Monitor your financial statements for any irregular activities that may indicate identity theft.
