Twitter attacks
August 08, 2016
Hackers have unleashed “machine learning” to create a Twitter attack
that tricks the victim to click the malicious link two thirds of the
time, among the highest click rates ever reported for a large scale
phishing tool. This fully automated phishing system identifies
potential victims based on their social media engagement and habits
(e.g. number of followers and retweets) and crafts tweets that are
relevant to the victim’s interests. What does this mean to you?
o Be aware that tweets you read may be FAKE (aka machine generated)
and a sophisticated attempt to get you to click on the link.
o The
shortened URLs used in tweets make it very difficult to know where the
link goes.
