Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Requirements for a Major in Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Diagnostic Medical Sonography - General Prerequisites

Admission to the program requires a minimum grade of C in each prerequisite course.

Contains some required general education courses.

Remaining General Education Courses

  • WRT 150 - Strategies in Writing (4 credits)
  • General Education (Art) Credits: 3
  • General Education (Philosophy) Credits: 3
  • General Education (History) Credits: 3
  • General Education (World Perspectives) Credits: 3
  • Issues Credits: 6

B.S. Program Requirements (10 credits)

(Note: STA 215 is a pre-requisite for these 3 research courses)

Diagnostic Medical Sonography - General (Abdomen and Obstetrics-Gynecology): Courses (68 credits)

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography General emphasis prepares students for clinical practice in abdominal and obstetrics-gynecology. Vascular sonography is additional course work that is taken concurrently.

General (Abdominal and Obstetrics-Gynecology) sonographers work collaboratively with radiologists or other specialized physicians to diagnose a diverse range of conditions using invasive and non-invasive procedures using complex computerized high frequency sound wave and Doppler signal equipment. The sonographer must acquire excellent knowledge of sectional anatomy, clinical medicine, pathology, and the use of sonographic instrumentation.

  • Issues - (fulfills 1 of 2 Issue courses)

Echocardiography and Vascular Sonography Emphasis

Adult Echocardiography and either Pediatric Echocardiography or Vascular Sonography concentrations

The adult echocardiography and pediatric echocardiography/vascular sonography concentrations in the diagnostic and medical sonography degree prepares students for clinical practice in adult echocardiography and either pediatric echocardiography or vascular sonography.

Adult and pediatric echocardiographers practice a form of medical imaging that uses complex computerized high frequency sound waves and doppler signal equipment to visualize cardiovascular anatomy and function. They are responsible for delineating subtle differences between healthy and pathological cardiac and vascular structure and function, evaluate cardiac blood flow information, and document pathologic and other conditions. The echocardiographer must acquire excellent knowledge of cardiac and vascular anatomy, clinical medicine, pathology, and the use of sonographic instrumentation.

Echocardiographers work collaboratively with cardiologists in medical center, hospital, or private practices to produce differential diagnoses. Vascular sonographers perform patient examinations, assessments, acquire and analyze data using ultrasound and related technologies, provide a summary of findings to aid in patient diagnosis and management, and use independent judgment and systematic problem solving to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize the complete patient study. Vascular sonographers often work collaboratively with vascular surgeons but also work in radiology and cardiology departments in hospitals and private practices to discuss differential diagnoses.

Program Accreditation

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Echocardiography and Vascular Sonography Emphasis is accredited under the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) and programmatically through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology (JRC-CVT). Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Echocardiography and Vascular Sonography Emphasis

Selection Factors:

Admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography- Echocardiography and Vascular (DMS echo/vasc) Sonography Emphasis is a competitive process that requires a secondary application. Prospective students can access the application at http://www.gvsu.edu/cvs. The DMS echo/vasc Program is administered through the College of Health Professions: www.gvsu.edu/chp. Students who complete the prerequisite and general education courses by August of the year they start the program are eligible to apply February 1st of the same year. The prerequisite and general education courses are typically completed by the end of the sophomore year. Applicants are selected to enroll based on the following criteria:

(40%) Academic grade point average from completed prerequisite courses:

(10%) Academic grade point average from previous 2 calendar years or most recent 2 calendar years of study if the student has not been enrolled at a college or university. (30%) Interview and Writing Assessment completed on-site at the College of Health Professions. (5%) Completion of 16 hours of volunteer time or paid work in a health field documented on a resume. (5%) Two letters of recommendation on university forms. (10%) Additional considerations: Educational, leadership, scholarly, work experience and/or volunteer activities are valued and may impact selection decisions.
