HST 372 - From Slavery to Freedom

Ironically, modern concepts of freedom emerged from societies deeply invested in its opposite, slavery. This course looks at the history of slavery and its abolition in four American societies-Haiti, the U.S., Cuba, and Brazil-to distinguish the distinctive ways in which each of them defined and constructed freedom. Part of Freedom and Social Control theme. Offered fall semester. Prerequisites: HST 204, LAS 210, or junior standing.
