'Shaping Narratives' TV Series Nominated for Michigan Emmys

Two episodes from WGVU's “Shaping Narratives” TV series were nominated for Emmys by the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The series, supported by a W.K. Kellogg grant, was a collaboration between WGVU and Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies. Integrative Studies faculty members Melanie Shell-Weiss and Andrea Riley-MukavetzLin Bardwell, NAAC program coordinator; and Steve Chappell, grants manager for WGVU, were among the people who worked on these episodes.

The episode, “Ngiiwe,” focuses on GVSU and Brooks College alum Belinda “Lin” Bardwell’s (BA in Liberal Studies ’14 , MPA, ’17)  search as an urban Native American in Grand Rapids to reclaim the relationships and traditions of her ancestors, following her as she visits the Native Food Summit, to her tribe’s farm, and a powwow. The episode, “Meeting God,” follows Rishi Makkar, a regular partner in Kaufman Institute and Religious Studies Program work, as he introduces Lin to Sikh beliefs, history, and culture on an immersive trip to a Gurdwara in London.

Emmy winners will be announced in June.
