Lorin Cartwright, GVSU Alum '79, Inducted into NATA Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Lorin Cartwright for her induction into the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Hall of Fame.  Lorin received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education (with honors) and minors in Biology, Health, and Athletic Training from Grand Valley State University.  She went on to get her Master of Science in Education from the University of Michigan. Lorin has been an Educator, Athletic Trainer, Athletic Administrator, and Assistant Principal.  She has served the profession in many capacities. Some highlights include the Athletic Training Licensure Committee, Bureau of Health Professions in the state of Michigan;  Michigan Task Force on Women in Sports, Michigan Board of Athletic Training; several leadership and committee positions within MATS, GLATA, and NATA. Additionally, she has contributed to the profession in countless ways to advance the profession of athletic training from her leadership work, to presenting at conferences, to advocating and more. Lorin has written several textbooks and articles. Her most recent works include:

  • An Article of Athletic Trainers and Patients Who Identify as LGBTQ+: Stressors of Sexual Minority Identity and How it Affects Mental Health, Considerations in Addressing Bias to Ensure Inclusion and Healthcare, Integrating Safe Space Ally Training Into the Athletic Training Curriculum 
  • Textbooks titled Fundamentals of Athletic Training, Athletic Trainer’s BOC Exam Prep., and Cultural Competency in Sports Medicine.

Lorin has received several awards and recognition for her contribution to advancing the profession of athletic training.

  • 1998 NATA (National Athletic Trainers' Association) Distinguished Service Award
  • 1999 MATS (Michigan Athletic Trainers' Society) Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award
  • 2002 GLATA (Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association) Athletic Trainer Award
  • 2010 GLATA Outstanding Educator Award
  • 2016 she was awarded the GLATA Golden Pinnacle Award and induction into the hall of fame 
  • 2018 she received NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award
  • 2019 she was inducted into the MATS Hall of Fame.

This June 2023 she will be inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Hall of Fame.
