Hats for Hope

Hats for Hope: One Stitch at a Time

Hats for Hope is a year-round service initiative led by Grand Valley State University student-athletes, focused on making a meaningful impact in our local community. Through this project, student-athletes create and donate handmade winter hats to adult cancer patients at local hospitals—providing not just warmth, but comfort, dignity, and a reminder that they are supported.

This initiative is rooted in the belief that small acts of service can create powerful change. Each hat represents time, care, and compassion, as well as a commitment from our student-athletes to give back beyond their sport.

Hats for Hope is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all skill levels. Whether participants are experienced in crocheting or learning for the first time, they are invited to be part of something bigger than themselves. Athletes create throughout the year, allowing to engage whenever their schedule allows.

As part of GVSU Athletics’ commitment to holistic student-athlete development, this initiative also reinforces key life skills such as empathy, service, and community engagement.

Impact Incentive:For every hat completed and donated, student-athletes will earn one hour of community service, recognizing both their time and their contribution to the community.

Join us in making a difference—one stitch at a time. 💙

GVSU x Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids: Volunteer Opportunities

Grand Valley State University student-athletes are proud to partner with Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids—an organization dedicated to providing a free, welcoming support community for children, adults, families, and friends navigating cancer or grief.

Through this partnership, student-athletes have the opportunity to engage in meaningful, hands-on service that directly impacts the lives of others in the West Michigan community. Gilda’s Club offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities, allowing individuals to contribute in ways that align with their interests, strengths, and schedules.

Volunteer roles include supporting house and grounds efforts to maintain a warm and inviting space, assisting with administrative and office tasks that keep operations running smoothly, helping plan and execute special events, and stepping in for flexible, as-needed projects through the “It’s Always Something” team. For those who enjoy cooking and hospitality, opportunities are available to prepare and serve meals that foster comfort and connection through the Supper Together and Meal Teams.

This partnership reflects GVSU Athletics’ commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes who lead with empathy, service, and purpose. By engaging with Gilda’s Club, student-athletes not only give back—they become part of a compassionate community that values connection, resilience, and support.

Whether you’re looking for a consistent volunteer role or flexible opportunities that fit your schedule, there is a place for you to get involved and make an impact.

Children's Hospital

GVSU Student-Athletes have joined with the local Grand Rapids Children's Hospital to spread cheer to kids in the hospital. Monthly, student-athletes from different teams visit the hospital to record a TV program, play bingo, and pass out toys and prizes to kids.
