In accordance with Michigan Public Health Code Sections 333.17901-333.17907 which sets the parameters for the practice of athletic training by those licensed in the state of Michigan and our institutional Standards of Professional Practice (i.e. standing orders document).
GVSU Athletic Training staff members will NOT provide continuing care, rehabilitative services or return to play decisions for any visiting team members.
Please send the necessary supplies to fulfill any taping requests as the GVSU Athletic Training staff will assist visiting team members with pre-game taping and first-aid care.
If an athletic trainer will not be traveling with your team and your institution is interested in hiring an Athletic Trainer to provide healthcare to your student athletes while at Grand Valley State University please contact John Bernal through NovaCare Rehabilitation at [email protected].
Visiting Team Care & Emergency
PURPOSE
To establish guidelines and a standard of care for all visiting athletic teams that are traveling without a licensed/certified athletic trainer.
POLICY
In accordance with Michigan Public Health Code Sections 333.17901-333.17907 which sets the parameters for the practice of athletic training for those licensed in the state and the GVSU Standards of Professional Practice, GVSU Athletic Training Staff members may provide limited assistance to visiting team student-athletes.
Services are limited to pre-game taping, basic first aid for pre-event participation and first aid for acute injuries and emergencies occurring during the game. GVSU Athletic Training Staff members will not provide continuing care or follow-up care, rehabilitative services, or make return to play decisions for visiting team student athletes.
Visiting teams requiring taping must bring their own supplies and materials.
By participating in the sport, the visiting student-athlete (or the parent/guardian of a minor) acknowledge receipt of this policy and consent to the listed services being provided by a member of the GVSU Athletic Training Staff.
PROCEDURE
The GVSU Athletic Training Staff member assigned to the sport, will communicate with each visiting team to explain emergency and medical services available during their visit consistent with this policy.
Communication will occur prior to the Fall, Winter and Spring athletic seasons, and is typically conducted via email.

EAP Temporary Modifications.
Campus construction may interfere with our ability to follow the emergency action procedure for our athletic venues for a temporary time period. All athletic department staff will be notified via email when a construction project will impact our emergency route and will be given instructions for a temporary route. Visitors to our campus can reference this website for the most up to date information regarding emergency action procedure temporary modifications.

Venue Specific Emergency Action Procedures
Each athletic venue has a specific emergency action procedure that is posted on-site. Each emergency action procedure will provide helpful information in the event of an emergency such as a physical building address (if applicable), the preferred access point for EMS and the location of the nearest AED. GVSU Athletic Training Staff will have an AED on-site for competitions.
