Dr. Ross Sherman has been at GVSU since 2008 in his role as Associate Professor in the Department of Movement Science teaching in the exercise science degree program, and has been providing GVSU Athletics’ teams with sport science support since 2009. Sherman has worked with men’s and women’s basketball, football, women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball since starting at GVSU.
In his role as sport scientist at GVSU, Sherman coordinates the use of cutting-edge technology to collect physiological, mechanical, and subjective data during rehab, practice, and game play to aid sport coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, and sports medicine to optimize athlete training, performance, and return-to-play.
Sherman was a sport science consultant to the Detroit Red Wings from 2014-2019 where he helped coordinate the pre-season fitness testing of all the players in the franchise system and in-season heart rate monitoring and performance testing of the NHL roster. Before moving to the US, he also worked with a World-ranked squash player, a Premier League professional soccer team, Olympic-level kayakers, and amateur athletes preparing for the Marathon des Sables.
Sherman is a certified sports performance coach with USA Weightlifting (USAW), and completed an athlete movement analysis and performance system course (3DMAPS) with the Gray Institute.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physiology from the University of Sunderland, Sherman completed his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Loughborough University. His Ph.D. is in sport and exercise science and was completed at the University of Bath in 2004.
