Artist Profile: Ralph Gibson

Published January 1, 2017 by Nicole Webb

Within his long career, California-born Ralph Gibson has managed to combine his love of books and book-making with the skills he learned as a Photographer’s Mate in the United States Army in 1956. In 1969, Gibson moved to New York City to begin his own publishing company, Lustrum Press. Since then, he has published over 40 specialized books on a single subject called monographs. His photographs are featured in over 150 museum collections around the world.

Gibson’s style is characterized by high-contrast, often black and white, abstract photographs that feature everyday objects. His photographs are known for being on the edge of mysterious and erotic, leaving the viewer to build a narrative on their own for each image.
