Cara Franke, Biomedical Lab Engineer

Tell us a little about you and your role at aMDI.

I am a student engineer for aMDI. I have worked on many projects, from design history file remediation to 3D printing to testing.

What are your goals for the next 5 years?

I hope to get my bachelor’s and master’s in engineering. I would love to do research on bioprinting in the next five years, and potentially start a bioprinting program at GVSU. Once I get my degree, I would like to do more work in bioprinting or get into prosthetics.

What are some significant projects you have worked on?

I worked on a few 3D printing projects. I actually learned how to 3D print at aMDI over the summer. I also led a design history file remediation during my first co-op.

Tell us about your education and career track so far.

I am a junior, and I am studying biomedical engineering with an emphasis in mechanical engineering. I just applied for the master’s program at Grand Valley, and I plan to get my master’s in biomedical as well. I have done some work in orthotics and prosthetics, and I could see myself really enjoying work in this field, too.

Student Spotlight Fall 2022

Co Nguyen, Mechanical Lab Engineer

Co at Project Day 2021

Tell us a little about you and your role at aMDI.

I was born in Vietnam but moved to Michigan when I was 2 years old. I spent the majority of my life in Battle Creek, Michigan, but moved to the Grand Rapids area to attend Grand Valley State University. Part of my work with aMDI as a Lab Engineer includes working with additive manufacturing (3D Printing) and applying mechanical design and development to various projects.

What are your goals for the next 5 years?

I am planning on doing the combined degree program to graduate with my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering within the next couple of years. Once graduated, I do want to take some time and travel to visit my family in Vietnam, but I hope to find a career in product design and development or anything with 3D additive manufacturing.

Co Nguyen

What are some significant projects you have worked on?

A lot of projects are confidential so I can’t go into too much detail but I have been working with a company on the design and development of a medical device ever since I started working here. I work with a lot of small companies to do rapid prototyping using the 3D printer to test their ideas.

What is your favorite movie genre?

My least favorite movie genre is horror. Unfortunately, all my friends still make me watch horror movies.

How do you spend your free time?

One of my favorite things to do is travel with my friends and try new foods. I got into video games a couple years ago and started to stream for fun. My favorite game to play is Valorant.

Tell us about your education and career track so far.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Grand Valley State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. I applied to the combined degree program to try to also pursue my master’s degree.

What is your dream destination?

I would love to visit Japan one day. I love their culture and food. I always see cool videos about their street vending machines and want to try that.

Why did you want to join aMDI?

Even though I’m pursuing a mechanical engineering degree, I originally wanted to work in the biomedical industry. aMDI works a lot with medical devices so I thought I would get a lot of experience in that
