1. CLAS Professional Support Staff Advisory Committee (PSS AC)
The college has created a new CLAS Professional Support Staff Advisory Committee (PSS AC).  The committee includes the Assistant Dean for Finance, the Administrative Assistant, two PSS members from the Dean’s Office and 7 CLAS PSS from the college.

The purpose is to:

  • Engage PSS staff in leadership opportunities, best practices, training, and professional development in a collaborative and inclusive way that focuses on PSS staff retention and success;
  • Promote transparency, equity and belonging amongst PSS in the college;
  • Provide information to inform decision-making and support advocacy for PSS in college/university-level conversations.

The PSS Advisory Committee (PSS AC) will be advisory in nature, recommending actions to the CLAS Assistant Dean for final decisions and actions. The PSS AC will report to and engage with the larger CLAS PSS group regularly in order to incorporate all possible perspectives and concerns of the college. The PSS AC will also engage with the APSS union as needed. Ad hoc sub-committees may be formed for specific initiatives which require in-depth research, outreach and collaboration.

Please congratulate the members of the inaugural CLAS Professional Support Staff Advisory Committee.

5. Student Success Network – Faculty Partners Needed for 2023/2024
The Student Success Network is seeking faculty partners for the 2023/2024 academic year. The Student Success Network (SSN) aims to provide opportunities to connect our newest Lakers with faculty who play an integral role in educating first-year students about “How to College”. Faculty partners are asked to commit to sending messages (provided) about student success to their groups throughout the year and be an active resource when necessary. The SSN team provides extensive support to faculty partners, and previous participants report the time commitment to be light and has enhanced their role in supporting students in all aspects of their work. SSN leadership offers several learning opportunities aimed at enhancing faculty proficiency in student success and support. We hope that you will consider this invitation to become a Faculty Partner in the SSN and join us in enhancing the 1st year experience for our newest Lakers. This is a valued University service activity that can have a significant impact on our students.  If you are interested, please submit an online application  to share your interest by May 1st.

6. Final Grades for Winter 2023
REMINDER - CLAS Final Grade Reporting Deadline Winter 2023

All faculty must report their final grades by 11:59 p.m (midnight), Monday, May 1. This will allow the Dean’s Office to use the time available on Tuesday morning, May 2, to address any missing grade reports and meet the university deadline of 12:00 noon. This notice gives faculty time to adjust their grading timelines to meet the new deadline. All CLAS departments/units are asked to adhere to this new deadline rather than instituting one of their own. Any questions should be directed to AD Betty Schaner.

Please notify Betty Schaner and Mona Silva of the designees for routing grading emails.

In preparation for grading, please make sure you have accurate contact information for all faculty – tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor, and adjunct – in case outreach is needed for missing grades. The Dean’s Office is requesting that each unit head reinforce the grading deadline with all faculty.

The Grading Process
Posting final grades in Blackboard does not complete the process. All grades must be posted in Banner. For instructions, go to Banner Grade Entry Instructions.
The Last Date of Academic Activity (LDAA) must be reported for all students who earn a grade of W, F or NC. For information and instructions, go to Last Date of Academic Activity Process.

Assigning Incomplete Grades - IMPORTANT
A grade of "I" (incomplete) is to be assigned only in truly extenuating circumstances and only if the student has completed most (minimum of 2/3) of the work required for the course.
The CLAS website provides detailed information on the considerations involved in assigning an incomplete grade. Any questions regarding incomplete grades should be directed to AD Schaner.
All faculty are required to submit an online Incomplete Grade form for each incomplete grade assigned. Faculty who will not be teaching in Spring/Summer 2023 or Fall 2023, should work with their unit heads to identify a designee to work with the student(s) to resolve the incomplete courses.

Please review the university’s Incomplete Grade Policy. Note in particular the timeline for resolving outstanding incomplete grades. The CLAS Dean’s Office will be following this policy as units are contacted at the end of the fall and winter semesters regarding any remaining unresolved incomplete grades.
