Social Work

"We were asked what we were leaving of ourselves in El Salvador and what we would be taking back with us. For me... I’m leaving a large part of myself- it’s been just 2 weeks and I’ve never felt more connected to a people and their culture...I am taking with me the humility, the generosity, the warmth, and the affection of these people. I want my life to incorporate these traits and values."

Social Work Study Abroad Programs

Social Work

Jordan

Research the expansion of human rights, cultural competence, and empowerment in Ghana. Evaluate equality, social and political justice in China. Develop a global perspective in social work practice, and enrich yourself in a multi-cultural experience while traveling in Ireland. You can begin to shape the human service delivery systems worldwide by studying abroad in the country of your choice.

For those interested in combining their study abroad experience with service learning or an internship, or looking to focus solely on an internship or service learning, there are many options. Customized internships are available in a few locations through GVSU internships, as well as other programs such as ELAP and World Endeavors.

Academic Advice

  • Students can and are encouraged to go abroad anytime throughout their time at GVSU; however, if they wish to participate in a full year/semester long program and stay on the 4-year plan to degree completion, they should plan to go abroad during their sophomore year.
  • As juniors and seniors, students may wish to consider taking SW 354 abroad on Faculty-led programs in Ireland, Ghana, and El Salvador/Guatemala. CECI encourages them to begin looking at these programs as early as possible for planning purposes.
  • Students interested in completing their Field Practicum abroad must discuss this possibility well in advance with Dr. Robin Smith-Colton and their field coordinator. While rare, it may be possible.
  • Students interested in earning Social Work elective credits abroad can have their study abroad program reviewed for potential SW 100, SW 380, and/or SW 499 credit. Prior planning is strongly encouraged so CECI advisers can figure out where these best fit into overall student degree goals.
  • Consider fulfilling your Issues General Education requirement abroad. Find out how!

Restrictions

  • Students may NOT take the Social Work core courses abroad - SW 316, SW 317, SW 318, SW 319, SW 340, SW 341, and SW 348 must be completed at GVSU.
  • Courses will be reviewed on a case by case basis through the course equivalency process.
  • Students should be working with their CECI advisor to plan and make appropriate course selections for study abroad.

Keep in Mind

  • Once you have selected a program, be sure to meet with your adviser at least three months prior to departing for your program.
  • Be sure to explore both GVSU and external options by browsing the Program Suggestions below. Students are not limited to GVSU study abroad programs.
  • There are several opportunities to intern and or volunteer while abroad.
  • Students are also able to fulfill General Education requirements abroad, including their General Education Issues requirement.
