Welcome to the Grand Valley State University Speech Lab!

The Mission of the Speech Lab is to empower speakers to shape their lives, professions, and society through confident and effective public presentations.

Who We Are

Our consultants consist of undergraduate and graduate students from a wide variety of majors like communications, information systems, advertising and public relations, sports management and so much more. What is additionally unique about our consultants is that they have all completed a rigorous semester long training program certified by the National Association of Communication Centers. This means that no matter who you work with, you will be given the same consistent information. In fact, with over 100 communication centers in the United States, the GVSU Speech Lab is one of only 18 communication centers with a nationally certified training program.

What We Do

The Grand Valley Speech Lab is a peer to peer communication center that help students with all elements of the oral presentation process including: topic selection, organization, supporting materials, and most importantly, practicing delivery. Sessions can be scheduled to help with in-class speech assignments, or with public presentations such as wedding toasts, a sales pitch, or award presentation.

Where You Can Find Us

The Speech Lab has three locations to best serve you. Our home office is in 154 Lake Michigan Hall. We offer evening consultations in the Knowledge Market in Pew Library on the Allendale campus. Additionally, you can find us inside of Steelcase Library on the downtown Grand Rapids campus.

When preparing for a presentation, practice is key. Once you've created an outline for the speech or presentation, try practicing out loud in front of friends or family to become more comfortable with the delivery of the speech. #TacticTuesday
