Unplug with Campus Rec! Oct 1-13

Campus Recreation is logging off the next two weeks to prove just how serious they are about the importance of spending time with each other, getting involved, being active, and living healthy. Beginning Oct 1, Campus Recreation is giving students a chance to unplug from technology, focus on the health of their mind and body, and get involved with programs, services, and events. Activities include, but are not limited to, Intramural Sports registrations, Explore West Michigan outdoor trips, Club Sports events, Group Exercise Dance Party, Homecoming Tailgate, along with drop-in activities like rock climbing and biking or appointment-based programs like personal training and massages.

This campaign will also help promote partnered events on campus, including Walk with the Deans and Wellness Summit, providing an abundance of ways to "be social." Thanks to the support from campus departments, participants can share their story, including why and how they unplug, through testimonials at various locations on campus, including Fusion, Mary Idema Pew Library, Counseling Center, Recreation Center, Student Life Office, and Human Resources.

“We are really excited to spend time away from technology and social media and focus on what we do to improve students’ experiences within Campus Recreation through face-to-face interactions,” states Kayla Cupples, Assistant Director of Marketing and Special Events. “We know social media has positive effects and helps connect us in so many ways, but there seems to be less understanding of the potential negative effects to wellbeing. With something for everyone, we hope to better connect students with each other, with our department, and with the campus community in general. We also hope to have a little fun while doing so!”

Campus Recreation is part of the Division of Student Services at GVSU. Its offices are located in the Recreation Center on the Allendale campus. Its staff consists of eight full-time professional staff members, one graduate assistants, multiple part-time adjuncts, and approximately 150 undergraduate student staff members.

“While we still encourage you to follow @gvsurecreation on all social media platforms, because that’s our job, all posts will be pre-scheduled to allow staff members to take a break, too!” adds Cupples. “Just come hang out with us; we’re excited to see you and get to know you better. And keep an eye out for the Campus Recreation golf cart riding around campus passing out free swag. That’s always a plus!”
